Executive Summary

Sesame can be an important export crop in Ghana and the country can play a substantial role in the global sesame trade. Annual exports of sesame from Ghana can reach about USD 3 billion. These opportunities are currently poorly recognized and it is time to develop support and action to facilitate promotion, production and export of this crop. The benefits of sesame are not well understood in Ghana, and a significantly clearer interpretation of the country's competitive position and opportunities is essential. This industry overview reveals areas of uncertainty in the formulation of strategy and associated activities to promote and produce sesame in Ghana. Firstly, a greater understanding of Ghana's prospects in sesame production and options for promotion is needed.

Recommendations

1. Appraise and evaluate research, trials and extension services available to the sesame

sub-sector.

2. Investigate opportunities in potential markets, with particular focus on the oil markets in

the Far East such as South Korea and Taiwan.

3. Explore the possibility of changes in the Korean tendering process.

4. Evaluate the potential competitive position of Ghanaian sesame in the international market

comprising Asia, Europe, America, Middle East and assess the opportunity for increasing

market share.

5. Evaluate the opportunity for differentiating Ghanaian sesame for oil users and explore

the economics and market potential for pressing sesame in Ghana on an industrial scale.

6. Appraise the requirements of other sesame sub-sectors.
